Germany developed a high-efficiency energy-saving greenhouse fill light LED light source

April 18, 2023

A subsidiary of Siemens AG in Germany has recently launched a deep red light-emitting diode (LED) greenhouse fill light source, which can more effectively meet the needs of crop photosynthesis, and the energy-saving benefits are more obvious.

In recent years, the successful development of high-power LEDs has laid the foundation for the application of this technology in greenhouse fill light. Siemens recently published a press release saying that the LED greenhouse fill light source developed by its subsidiary "Osram Opto Semiconductors" has a wavelength of 660 nm, which is very suitable for plant photosynthesis. In addition, this LED light source can convert 37% of the input electrical energy into light energy output, and the luminous efficiency is among the best in the same color light source, so it is more energy-efficient than the traditional greenhouse supplemental light source.

According to Siemens, a pilot project in Denmark uses about 50,000 of these LED light sources to fill light in areas of several thousand square meters, reducing greenhouse energy consumption by 40%.

At present, the artificial light source in the greenhouse mainly includes fluorescent lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, low-pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps. These sources have a large proportion of infrared and green light, and the red and blue spectral components required for crop photosynthesis are less. The light energy utilization rate is low and the energy consumption is large.

Relatively speaking, LED light source can not only improve the utilization of greenhouse light energy, but also promote crop growth in different growth stages of crops. For example, red light can help crop growth, and blue light can help crops form germ. Targeted adjustment of the proportion of blue light in total illumination in the 10% and 30% ranges also saves fertilizer.

According to Siemens, the red light plus blue LED system is 60% lighter than conventional high pressure sodium lamps, and the LED light source has an average life of 100,000 hours and can be maintenance free for many years.
