Scientists at the University of Braunschweig have developed a new solar concentrator that can concentrate light from any direction on a solar panel. The researchers said that this funnel can be adjusted to different wavelengths of light and stacked to convert the entire spectrum into electrical energy.
A solar concentrator is a type of lens that focuses sunlight on a small area. Since most solar cells are only suitable for working in direct sunlight, they have not been widely adopted in the solar field.
But this new type of concentrator consists of a randomly oriented pigment that absorbs light from almost any angle of incidence and maps it onto components that face a single direction. Only 10% loss in the condenser process. Experiments have shown that this concentrator can absorb about 99% of the incident light, and the light redirection quantum efficiency is greater than 80%.
Scientists expect that in the future it will be possible to stack concentrators of different amplitudes on top of each other to form a concentrator that can absorb the entire spectrum. Since these concentrators are made from inexpensive, versatile materials, they can be developed into a low-cost, high-efficiency solar cell booster.
