Japan introduces light guide film to reduce the number of LEDs

Japan Electronics LIGHT, a related company of NEC Electronics, has put into production a light-guiding film that has been surface-treated for efficient lighting of mobile phone keys, and has been on sale since July 2008.



According to the optical simulation results, the product forms a light guiding pattern on the optical film having a thickness of only 0.1 to 0.2 mm by screen printing. The light-emitting LED is disposed on the end surface of the light guiding film, and the light emitted by the LED is diffused, so that the button of the mobile phone is uniformly illuminated. This will reduce the number of LEDs. According to the company, when the light guide film is used and two or so LEDs are provided, the former can achieve the same brightness or uniform light emission characteristics as when the light guide film is not used and 10 LEDs are used.

This new product has two types of manufacturing methods. They are a surface-emitting type using screen printing and a side-emitting type using special cutting processing. In the surface light-emitting type, an end surface light-emitting type LED is disposed on the end surface of the light guiding film, and light can be incident from the end surface of the light guiding film. The incident light is reflected by a light guiding pattern printed on the bottom surface of the light guiding film using a special reflective material to illuminate the surface of the light guiding film. On the other hand, the side-illuminated type performs special groove processing based on optical simulation on the light-guiding film, and an end-illuminated type LED is disposed on the end surface. Light emission is achieved by reflecting the cut pattern of the semi-cylindrical shape to the side surface of the groove portion.

In addition, the company has also produced LED package backplane light guide modules that print the same light guide pattern on the surface of 2mm thick acrylic sheets. Its dimensions are 150mm50mm. It is used on the monochrome liquid crystal backlight module for in-vehicle equipment.

The performance indicators of the new products are customized according to customer requirements. In terms of sample price, the light guide film of the mobile phone button is about 100 yen. The company plans to reach a mass production scale of about 1 million units per month in 2009.
