Sharp builds LED plant factory to make strawberries "root" in the desert

Sharp has developed a plant factory for seven years. It is expected to establish a commercial strawberry factory display base in the United Arab Emirates in May to enter the high-consumption Middle East market. Sharp is also commercializing the plant factory technology with Osaka Prefecture University and is expected to launch in 2017.

Japan’s consumer electronics information website “Watch Home” reported that Sharp has been working with Osaka Prefecture University since 2009 to study the existing technology and facilities in the Japanese technology industry to develop plant factories that are not affected by natural weather and germs. An experimental base was established in the huge factory area of Panel 10, SDP. In particular, the plant factory developed by Sharp is not placed in a special exclusive building, but in a container.

In the summer of 2013, Sharp will jointly develop a certain degree of plant factory technology in the domestic industry and education, and migrate to the hot Middle East desert.

Sharp established a tropical experimental base in the Sharp Middle East subsidiary of the Jabil Ali Free Trade Zone in Dubai. Over the past three years, it has succeeded in planting strawberries in artificial environments with technology.

According to the report, at present, Sharp has three containers at the experimental base of the factory. After the future commercialization, it is planned to have at least 8 containers in the first group to have the lowest economic scale. It is expected that the price of a group will be less than 100 million yen ( About NT$29 million).

Sharp estimates that such a group of eight containers of plant plants can be harvested for 10 months a year, harvesting 8 kilograms a day, a total of 3 metric tons of strawberries per year, and in addition to strawberries, can also grow lettuce or herbs.
However, after Hon Hai’s entry into the country, it is still unclear whether Sharp’s plan to enter the agricultural market will change.
