When it is time to mass production, Chai Yan said: "At present, the research and development of silicon substrate LED has been qualitative, and reliability testing has been done. The next step is commercial mass production. We think it takes one year to one year. Half the time."

Cost priority, vigorously develop silicon substrate technology

Recently, Purui Optoelectronics announced that it will receive another 15 million US dollars in financing to accelerate the research and development of LED technology, and the funds will be used to develop GaN LEDs on silicon substrates. As of August 2011, Purui Optoelectronics has raised $60 million.

“In China's epitaxial plant, the sapphire substrate is mostly two inches in size. Only a few manufacturers are trying four inches, but the cost is still high. We use silicon substrates to make chips. Once successful, it means that the manufacturing cost of the chips can be Reduced by 70%." Chai Yan is very optimistic about the future market prospects of silicon substrates.

Chai Yan also pointed out that in terms of production process, most of the existing LED epitaxial wafers use sapphire or silicon carbide as the substrate material. However, large diameter sapphire and silicon carbide substrates are expensive and the process is difficult to handle and cannot be widely used. Therefore, the high production cost of the upstream also inhibits the popularity of LEDs for the home lighting market.
