Philips and GSF establish LED light source indoor farm

Currently, Philips, the global leader in the lighting industry, has partnered with Green Sense Farms (GSF), an agricultural company based in Chicago, to build an indoor farm that uses LED growth sources for specific crops and is one of the largest indoor farms in the world.

After the farm uses Philips LED “Light Recipes” to optimize production, this innovative farm model allows GSF to harvest 20 to 25 times a year and save 85% of its energy. This result will significantly increase crop yields, reduce operating costs, and provide consumers with locally grown fresh vegetables throughout the year.

Udo van Slooten, director of horticultural lighting at Philips, points out that “the vertical hydroponics technology that GSF is using and the Philips LED growth source give them a unique advantage – they can continue to produce quality crops all year round.”

It is reported that GSF has invested millions of dollars to renovate and upgrade its indoor planting space of more than 28,000 cubic meters. The company will be equipped with 14 plant height towers of 7.62 meters in two environmentally controlled growth chambers and will use Philips' energy-efficient LED lighting solutions to grow specific crops. This method also eliminates the use of harmful pesticides, fertilizers and preservatives, resulting in an organic increase in yield and virtually no chemical addition.
