Pittsburgh University Announces an LED Street Light Life Cycle Assessment Report

March 01, 2023

The Mascaro Center for Sustainable Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh has published an evaluation report for street light replacement lamps. The study compares LED lights with metal halide lamps, high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, and induction lamp technology, and identifies LEDs as winners, although it has received much attention in environmental issues such as LED production and recycling.

The research team's report shows that although the initial input cost of LED lamps is too high, LED street lamps consume less than half of the energy, compared with metal halide lamps and high-pressure sodium lamps, the service life is more than five times, and can produce More light sources. Gas-sensing lamps are another emerging technology. The team's report shows that gas-sensing lamps will surpass LED replacement lamps in terms of energy savings and light efficiency, but they will have a greater impact on the environment during use.

University of Pittsburgh Street Light Assessment Report

The city of Pittsburgh estimates that if the city uses LED street lights, it will save $1 million in energy costs and $700,000 in maintenance costs, which will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The team found that LED housings, which are dominated by plastic and metal wires, consume far less energy than the high-pressure sodium lamps in the production process compared to the energy consumed by high-pressure sodium lamps with aluminum casings.

In the case of hazardous substances, LED bulbs do not contain mercury. Metal halide bulbs contain an average of 15 mg of hazardous substances or mercury, while induction bulbs contain an average of 6 mg of hazardous substances or mercury.

The city of Pittsburgh will replace 40,000 street lights with LED street lights, which will cost $21 million more than the replacement cost of a $9 million metal halide lamp. However, the estimated cost of maintenance, the study of the report concluded that the replacement cost of the burned metal halide lamp would be as high as $44 million before the first LED street lights were replaced.
