What are lumens in lighting?

October 19, 2022
When shopping for Led Smart Panel Light or regular light bulbs, you may see a reference to "lumens" or "lumens" somewhere in the packaging. But what are lumens?

Lumens are a measure of brightness

Lumen is a scientific unit that expresses the visible light output of a light source. The brighter the light source, the more lumens it produces. The measurement of lumens is weighted and adjusted based on how humans perceive light.

So, for example, if you compare a Smart Led Panel Light that outputs 900 lumens to a smart LED panel light that outputs 2000 lumens, a smart LED panel light that outputs 2000 lumens will be brighter than a smart LED panel light that outputs 900 lumens. The more lumens the lamp emits, the brighter the lamp becomes.

This means that a good measure of a lamp's efficiency is lumens per watt (lm/W). A typical 100-watt incandescent light bulb uses 100 watts of power and outputs about 1,600 lumens. Meanwhile, a 14-17 watt LED bulb can also put out about 1,600 lumens. This means you get more light with less power, saving you on your electricity bill.

The same principle applies to any type of lighting device: smart bulbs, Led Panel Lights or others. The more lumens emitted, the brighter the output device will be.

Know the Lighting Facts tab

For nearly 100 years, people have mainly used incandescent bulbs for lighting their homes, which allows us to compare relative brightness by the amount of power each bulb uses.

For example, you would buy a "60 watt light bulb" or "100 watt light bulb". With the invention of more efficient lighting options, such as LED bulbs that may consume only 15 watts but output as much as a 100-watt incandescent bulb, consumers need a new way to compare different lighting technologies.

To address this, the FTC has instituted a requirement that any light bulbs sold in the United States be packaged with the "Lighting Facts" label. The label shows the bulb's brightness in lumens, estimated annual energy cost, lifespan, and color temperature.

Other countries have similar labels showing light intensity or energy efficiency, such as India's BEE Star Label.

Instead of relying on a general understanding of how much light a particular wattage bulb should produce, you can now compare by the brightness (in lumens) of a bulb or other light source.
